United Orthodox Synagoge
21,500 SF New Construction
Houston, Texas
General Contractor: Butler Cohen Design + Build
Completed Winter 2024

This project involved the complete replacement of a synagogue originally constructed in 1965, which had been repeatedly compromised by flooding due to its location in a low-lying flood plain. The new, resilient structure features a raised foundation on concrete piers, an innovative design solution that allows floodwaters to flow harmlessly beneath the building during severe weather events.

The expansive new facility significantly enhances the congregation's capacity for worship, community, and education. It incorporates a new sanctuary, a social hall, a commercial-grade kitchen, a chapel, a library, and a dedicated wing for classrooms and administration. The new construction is seamlessly connected to an existing social hall via a covered walkway, creating a unified and future-proof campus. Reuse of the original stained glass decorative wall from the original sanctuary creates a sense of continuity for the congregation.
